How do I get my business on Google Maps?
To get your business on Google Maps, create a free Google Business Profile at google.com/business, enter your exact business name, address or service area, and category, then verify ownership by post, phone or video. Once verified, your business can appear in Maps results and the local panel.
Key facts
- ▸A Google Business Profile is free and is the single biggest factor in appearing on Google Maps.
- ▸Verification usually takes days by phone or video, or up to two weeks by postcard.
- ▸Businesses without a shopfront can list a service area instead of a street address.
- ▸Complete profiles with photos get significantly more calls and direction requests than bare ones.
Getting on Google Maps is one of the highest-value twenty-minute jobs a local business owner can do. Here is the whole process, without the jargon.
Step 1: Claim your free Google Business Profile
Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account. Search for your business first — Google often creates unclaimed listings from public records, and claiming an existing one is better than creating a duplicate.
Step 2: Enter your details exactly, once, properly
Use your real business name — not “Smith Plumbing | Best Plumber Northside 24/7”. Google suspends profiles for keyword-stuffed names. Pick the most specific category that describes what you do; it’s the strongest signal you control. If customers come to you, enter your address. If you go to them, choose a service-area business and list the suburbs you cover.
Step 3: Verify that you own the business
Google needs proof you’re really there. Depending on your business type it will offer verification by postcard, phone, email or — increasingly — a short video walkthrough of your premises or work vehicle. Video is usually fastest. Until you verify, your edits stay invisible.
Step 4: Fill in everything, then keep it alive
Opening hours, phone number, website, services, and at least a dozen real photos of your work, your team and your premises. A complete profile isn’t box-ticking: profiles with photos and fresh activity earn dramatically more calls than skeletons. Post an update every couple of weeks, even a small one — Google notices signs of life, and so do customers.
Step 5: Start collecting reviews immediately
Reviews are the fuel of Maps visibility. Ask every happy customer, make it effortless with a direct link or QR code, and reply to every review you get. Our guide to getting more Google reviews covers the exact routine.
What being listed doesn’t get you
A listing makes you eligible to appear — it doesn’t make you chosen. Whether you crack the three spots shown on the map depends on reviews, relevance, your website and how close the searcher is. More questions, answered
Does it cost anything to be on Google Maps?
No. A Google Business Profile is completely free. Companies that call offering to "register you with Google" for a fee are selling you something you can do yourself in twenty minutes.
I work from home — do I have to show my address?
No. Choose a service-area business when setting up, hide your address, and list the suburbs you cover instead. You can still appear on Maps for searches in those areas.
How long until my business appears after verifying?
Usually within a few days of verification. Showing up prominently — in the top three for your area — takes longer and depends on reviews, your profile's completeness and your website.
